Eyelid care

Regular and proper eyelid care can soothe tear film and eye surface, improve vision and relieve excessive tearing

Dr. Valéry Vinzent Wittwer

Eyelid inflammation and congested meibomian glands are the most common causes of dry and watery eyes. The simplest treatment method is eyelid care.

Aim of therapy

Calm eyelid edges with functioning meibomian glands and intact oil film

  • Eyelid care should be carried out daily for one month
  • Then only when needed and without medication
  • Follow-up by the ophthalmologist if cortisone-containing ointment (Tobradex®) is used after 2 weeks or to discuss further treatment options, such as IPL light therapy

What you need for eyelid care

  • Heat mask (Thera°Pearl® /Eye mask®)
  • cotton swab
  • Cleanser (Systane Lid Wipes® /NavibleF®)
  • dry towel
  • Eye ointment (Tobradex® /Fucithalmic® /Posiformin®)

Guide to eyelid care in four steps

1. Warm

Place a heat mask (Thera°Pearl® Eye mask® or washcloth/gauze/cotton pad) on both eyelids for 4 minutes before going to sleep
> reactivates meibomian glands and liquefies viscous sebum
*Heat masks can be heated in the microwave or in hot water - beware risk of burns!

Warming
2nd eyelid massage

Fix the skin with one index finger and massage the upper and lower eyelids vertically towards the edge of the eyelid with a cotton swab or fingertip
> Sebum is removed from the glands (sebum is only visible under a microscope)

3. Eyelid cleaning

Apply Systane Lid Wipes® /NavibleF® /foamed baby shampoo to a cotton swab and rub it into eyelashes and eyelid edges with closed eyes. Then rinse with warm water and dry.
> Lids are cleansed of massaged sebum

4. eye ointment

Rinse eyelids with water and dry with a clean towel. Apply eye ointment (Fucithalmic®/Posiformin® /Tobradex®) to the conjunctival sac only in the evening after cleansing.
> helps to improve bacterial colonization and reduce inflammation
